Patrick

   The name Patrick is Scottish and Irish: A reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Phádraig (‘son of Patrick’), a personal name derived from Latin Patricius (‘son of a noble father’, ‘member of the patrician class’). This was the name of a 5th-century Romano-Briton who became the apostle and patron saint of Ireland, and it was largely as a result of his fame that the personal name was so popular from the Middle Ages onward. In Ireland the surname is usually Scottish in origin, but it is also found as a shortened form of Mulpatrick and Fitzpatrick. The Patrick family was first found in Kent, where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.
   The family Coat of Arms is silver with a black cross and a black stripe across the top on which there are two silver roses. The Crest is a hand holding a black cross. The family motto, "Ora et labora," means "Pray and work."
   Historian Willard Harvey Gildersleeve wrote in a letter, April 2, 1942, that RICHARD GILDERSLEEVE, widower, and BARBARA PATRICK, widow, of Aldeburg, married on April 18th, 1618 (Marriage and License Bonds, Probate Court, Ipwich, Suffolk).
