Wood Family Genealogy (2)

"Wood" is Scottish and/or English in origin. Spelling variations include: Wood, Woods, Wode, Would, Woid, Voud, Vould and others.
The WOOD family traces their ancestral roots back to Norman origin before the year 1100. The family name was first recorded in Dumfriesshire, England, where they held a family seat from about 1150, after losing their previously held lands in Thorpe Arnold in Leicestershire under the Earl of Leicester. From here they branched and migrated, gaining prosperity as a notable family of England and, later, other countries. The Family Motto on the Coat of Arms is "Defend."
This Wood line can be traced back to England, to WILLIAM WOOD, born in 1560 in London, England. He had a son named JOHN WOOD in Gloucestershire, England, around 1600, who traveled to America and married MARGARET CARTER around the year 1629. They had a son named after John's father: WILLIAM WOOD, who was born about 1638 in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. He married MARTHA EARLE of Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, and they had a son named JONATHAN WOOD, who was born about 1658 and married MARY TITUS. Mary either died or the marriage dissolved, because Jonathan then married JANE SMITH of Jamaica, Long Island, Queens County, New York. They had MARGRIET (MARGARET) WOOD in Jamaica, and she married JOSEPH WOOD, JR., from our other line of Wood ancestors, at the close of the 1600's.
Joseph Jr. and Margriet had JONATHAN WOOD, in Hempstead, New York. Jonathan married JOHANNA CROMPTON and moved to Rockland County, New York and had MARTHA WOOD, who met and married WILLIAM HAUSE.
