Hurst
   "Hurst" is English in origin, a topographic name for someone who lived on a wooded hill, from the Old English term hyrst, or a habitational name from one of the various places named with this word -- for example, Hurst in Berkshire, Kent, Somerset, and Warwickshire, or Hirst in Northumberland and West Yorkshireand.
   The Hurst surname was first found in Yorkshire, where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. The family motto translates to: "For God and the king." The Coat of Arms is silver with a red sun in splendour. The red sun represents 'Glory, Splendour, and Authority.' (In Ireland the Celts worshiped the sun as well as other celestial bodies. The invocation of the sun would be the same as invoking truth.) The Crest is a hurst of trees on a green mount.
   Our family can be traced back to, possibly, DIRCK HURST, born about 1500 AD, although the facts are sketchy. His wife is unknown, but they had a son, HUMPHREY, or in some genealogies, JOHN HURST (1520 - 1586), in Dewsbury, York, England. His wife is also unknown, but could have been either AGNES CRABTREE (b. 1530), or JENNETT NETTLETON (1522 - 1556). But whoever he married, they had a daughter together, named JANET HURST, who was born in 1545, in Northorem, Yorkshire, England. She was christened on 4 May 1545 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. She married EDMUND WOOD, also from Yorkshire, on the 4th of April, 1573, in Shelf(n Oram), Halifax, Yorkshire, England. They lived in Hamlet Shelf, Halifax, York, England, and had EDMUND WOOD, JR. Janet died in 1583 in Hamlet Of Shelf, Halifax Parish, Yorkshire, England.
