Crabtree

   "Crabtree" is English and/or Scottish in origin, from the Middle English term crabbe, and the Old English crabba (‘crab’—the crustacean). It was used as a nickname for someone with a peculiar gait, and/or from the Middle English crabbe ‘crabapple’ (the tree—probably of Old Norse origin), hence it's a topographic name for someone who lived by a crabapple tree, or a nickname for a cantankerous person, with reference to the sourness of the fruit. But may also have been influenced by the awkward-seeming locomotion of the crustacean. So our founding Crabtree ancestor may have just been a crabby guy with a limp. The early Coat of Arms feature a silver shield with a black cross raguly, and a blue chief. The black "raguly" sable (black) lines signify that the family has endured many difficulties. The hand with a dagger on the crest signify that they often fought back.
   The "Crabtree" surname was first found in Yorkshire, where they held a family seat from very ancient times, some say long before the Norman Conquest in 1066 A.D.
   They remained in Yorkshire for the next 500 years, where our ancestor AGNES CRABTREE (d. 27 Mar 1564) was born. Her particular Crabtree ancestors are unknown. But she married JOHN LOME (1497 - 12 Dec 1579) of Sowerby, West Riding, Yorkshire, on the fifth of August, 1543.* They had a son, WILLIAM LOME (1552 - 1592) in Lighthaples, Yorkshire, England, who married AGNES BOYNSTOW.
