Van Bremen |
| The
"Bremen" surname was first found in the county of Oldenburg, within
the tribal duchy of Saxony, where the name became noted for its many branches,
each house (Van Bremen, Zur Bremen, af Bremen, Bremer) acquiring a status and
influence which was envied by the princes of the region. Their crest featured
a sword delivered by the hand of Godyou didn't want to mess with the Bremens.
Our lineage to the Van Bremen family can be traced to JAN
JANSEN VAN BREMEN, born sometime at the beginning of the 17th Century in Bremen,
Germany. He emigrated to Bethlehem, Albany County, New York, in 1646.¹ Jan's
spouse is unknown, but while in Germany they had a son, JAN DIRKSE VAN BREMEN
(1620 - 9/26/1668), who married a woman named ALETJE (last name unknown). By
1655, Jan and Aletje lived in Beverwyck, New Netherlands.² By 1662, they lived
in Columbia County, New York, where Jan was contracted to deliver 400 logs for
Frans Pieterse Clau on the banks of the Flodders Kil. They had three children:
