Gardenier Genealogy

Gardenier
The Gardenier surname is an occupational term for a gardener, from an agent derivative of Old French gardin (‘garden’). The family name was first found in Bavaria, where they came from noble beginnings as a patrician family of Nuremberg, and gained a significant reputation for their contribution to the emerging mediaeval society. The Coat of Arms is a shield divided per pale black and red with a silver shell.
Many Gardeniers would escape the war and famine in Europe during the 18th and 19th Centuries in Europe and emigrate to America. But the first Gardenier to make the crossing was JACOB JANSE GARDENIER. He was born at Kampen, Overijssel, and became a carpenter. Jacob arrived in New Amsterdam on 28 Mar 1638 on den Harinck. He was smart and ambitious, and quickly came to own large expanses of property in the developing settlement of Albany County, New York.
He married a woman named JOSYNA (last name unknown). Josyna died at Albany, NY, ca Feb 1669. On 28 Feb 1669, Jacob Janse Flodder paid the Dutch Reformed Church, in Albany, 5 bushels of wheat for a funeral pall for Josyna. (Sometimes Jacob used the surname "Flodder," but his children never seemed to adopt that name.)
Those children were:

Jacob married again, on 18 Jan 1674, to Barentje Straetsman, at Albany, New York, born ca 1620 at Nuremburg. She was the widow of Coenraedtse Backer.
Jacob's son, JAN JACOBSE GARDENIER, was born around 1644 at Beverwyck, New York. He became a carpenter and millwright. Jan stayed in the Albany area and married SARTJE JANS VAN BREMEN (1648- ?) of Kinderhook, in 1669, and they settled in her home town.
The village of Kinderhook, New York is an old Dutch village that was settled in the 1600s, shortly after Henry Hudson voyaged up the river that now bears his name. Early inhabitants settled around what is now Stuyvesant Landing and gradually moved inland. The town originally stretched from the Hudson River to what is now the town of Chatham. Kinderhook means "Children's Corner" in Dutch and still retains its colonial Dutch atmosphere.
Jan Jacobse and Sartje had seven kids—in our line, a daughter, JOSYNTJE JANSE GARDENIER (born @ 1665).
