Kuhn Family Genealogy

Kuhn
The Kuhn surname was first found in Austria, where the family gained a significant reputation for its contributions to the emerging mediaeval society. It's derived from the personal name Kuno, a short form of Kunrat. The German word kühn, meaning ‘bold’, may have influenced the popularity of this short form, but is not necessarily the immediate source of it. Spelling variations include: Kuhn, Kuehn, Kuehne, Kuehnel, Cuhn, Cuehn, Cuehne and many more. The Coat of Arms features a lion and a chevron on a silver and blue shield.
Our lineage to the Kuhn family is German, and can be traced to a man named HANS KUHN, born about 1623 in Hüttengesäß, thirteen miles northeast of Hanau. He married a girl named CATHARINA in Hüttengesäß. Hans died and was buried in the same village on the 19th of March in 1693, at age 70. Catharina was buried 13 Nov 1679 in Hüttengesäß, at age 50. They had the following children:

Samuel, however, came to America in 1710 with the other German Palatines. According to the Koon and Coons Families of Eastern New York, published in 1937, "This Samuel is listed among the adult male Palatines of 1710, but as we do not find him mentioned in a census of about 1715, he may have died before that date. Possible he lived near Elizaville for a short time after September, 1712, and may have been buried in the ancient family burial lot on the old Kuhn farm near that place. Catharine, his widow, lived many years longer and was last mentioned in February 1736 as a baptismal sponsor with her son Veltin and wife, for a child of Veltin's daughter." (Note: in the book at right, Samuel is discussed in Chart Ten. Also included are Johannes Hause and Sarah Wheeler, listed as witnesses to baptisms in Chart 14, under Conrad Kuhn.)

Samuel Sr. or Jr. was a soldier in 1711 ("Palatine Volunteers to Canada") and CATHERINA MUELLER (1644 - 1736) had the following kids:

CHILDREN OF SAMUEL KUHN AND CATHERINA MUELLER

  • JOHAN JACOB KUHN, b. 1665 - 1675. Married MARIAH ELISABETH, then emigrated to New York in 1710, accompanied by children Johann Wilhelm (m: Elisabeth Kilmer); and Heinrich (m: Anna Gertraut Falckenberg).
  • SAMUEL KUHN, JR., born in 1668 in Huttengesass, Hessen Nassau, Prussia. M. Elizabeth ___? about 1692. He was among the adult Palatines of 1710. In 1711, he was one of the Palatine soldiers from Annsberg Camp near the present village of Germantown, Columbia county, New York. He had a son, J. Marcus, born July 30, 1714. When the census of about 1716 was taken, he had a family of 5 children at home with him. In August, 1724, Samuel Jr. was among those Palatines who chose to remain in Livingston Manor, and accepted a farm there from the 6,000 acres in the Town of Germantown. This farm had probably already been occupied by some member of the family for 10 or 11 years.

Samuel Kuhn, Sr. died on the sixth of September in 1712 in Elizabethville, New York. He's buried at the Kuhn Burial Ground, in Elizabethville, New York, on the ancient Coon farm. Some years ago, the late "Eratus Coons" of Germantown, a descendant of Veltin Kuhn, claimed to have discovered evidence that this Coon farm had been occupied by members of his family since as early as 1715, a period of over 200 years. Samuel, Sr., Samuel, Jr., and Veltin, were all probably buried in the old family burial plot on this farm.
Samuel's daughter ANNA MARIA KUHN (1670 - ?) was born before the great Palatine Emigration in what is now Germany. She married SEBASTIAN LOESCHER (1668 - 1750) in 1688 in Bayern, Pfaltz Hochspeyer, Germany. They sailed to America and had the following children:
