is English: a topographic name for someone who lived on the border between two
territories, especially in the Marches between England and Wales or England and
Scotland, from Anglo-Norman French marche (boundary). In some
cases, the surname may be a habitational name from March in Cambridgeshire, which
was probably named from the locative case of Old English mearc (boundary).
It could also be a nickname or personal name for someone who was born or baptized
in the month of March (Middle English, Old French march(e), Latin Martius (mensis),
from the name of the god Mars) or who had some other special connection with the
month, such as owing a feudal obligation then. The family Coat of Arms is black
with a gold cross between four lions heads and four crescents. The Crest features
an arm holding a battleaxe.
A family with this surname was
first found in Cambridgeshire, where they were seated from very early times and
were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished
assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.
to this family can be traced to JOHN MARCHE, who was born 1525 in Sherford, Devonshire,
