Locke Family Genealogy

Locke
The surname "Locke" is English: a metonymic occupational name for a locksmith, from Middle English, Old English loc (‘lock’, ‘fastening’). It's also a topographic name for someone who lived near an enclosure, a place that could be locked, Middle English loke, Old English loca. Middle English loke also came to be used to denote a barrier, in particular a barrier on a river which could be opened and closed at will, and, by extension, a bridge. The surname may thus also have been a metonymic occupational name for a lock-keeper.
The family was first found in Peeblesshire, where they were seated from early times. The Coat of Arms is gold with a black cross between two swans. The Crest is another swan. The Motto, "Assiduitate," means "By assiduity, not by sloth."
Our lineage to this family traces back to SIR WILLIAM LOCKE (b. @ 1559 in Bockhampton, Dorset, England). He married a woman named ELIZABETH (possibly EDITH) TALBOTT¹ (b @ 1565), and they had one daughter we know of, named EDITH LOCKE (b: ABT. 1590 in Cerne Abbas, Dorset, England).
Edith married JOHN MACOMBER (b. 1585 in Bridport, St. Mary's, Dorsetshire, England). Edith died on 10 May 1636 in Bridport, Dorsetshire, England, and is buried at St. Mary's Anglican Church, along with her husband, who died on the sixth of July, 1650, in Bridport. But they had a lot of children first...

William married He married PRISCILLA or URSUL in 1633 and was noted to be a cooper and to have a 'testimony' of such on 2 April 1638, which was, in all likelihood, an affidavit from a master coop indicating that William completed his apprenticeship. William sailed to the Plymouth Colony in America with his wife and son, and is noted as a resident of Duxbury on 20 August 1644 and as being in Marshfield by 1645. Marshfield Township is directly north of Duxbury Township. "Marshfield, the autobiography of a Pilgrim town (1640-1940)", by Marshfield Tercentenary Committee, 1940. p. 14: "Macomber House was built between 1639 and 1645 and was used as a watch or garrison place." • NOTES:

¹—The image at right shows the Talbot family lineage recorded in 1623. In the early 1600s 'Officers of Arms' from the College of Arms visited various counties in southern England and investigated claims of British nobility. Officers of Arms visited Dorset County in 1623 and recorded various Coats of Arms, lineages, seals, signatures, etc. of legitimate nobility and noted and discredited various false claims. The original Talbot pedigree recorded in 1623 is housed in folio 2 of the Harleian collection #1166. Records from the 1623 Dorset County visitation were published in 1885 by The Harleian Society under the title "The Visitation of the County of Dorset Taken in the Year 1623." The editor of this 'authored work' is John Paul Rylands. The original 1623 Talbot pedigree was signed by William Talbot and shows Edith Talbot married to William Locke and descended from 'Gentleman' William Talbot and Alice Heminge. (Note that 'vx.' is the abbreviation for the Latin word 'vxor' or 'uxor' which means wife, spouse, or consort.)
