Lewis
   The surname of "Lewis" is Welsh in origin. It's derived from Lowis, Lodovicus, a Norman personal name composed of the Germanic elements hlod (‘fame’) + wig (‘war’). This was the name of the founder of the Frankish dynasty, recorded in Latin chronicles as Ludovicus and Chlodovechus. The name was popular throughout France in the Middle Ages and was introduced to England by the Normans.
   The Lewis surname was first found in Glamorganshire, where the family held a seat from ancient times. The Coat of Arms is a black shield with a silver lion rampant. The Crest is a silver lion sejant. The family Motto: "Patriae fidus," translates as "Faithful to my country."
   Our lineage in this family can be traced to EDMUND LEWIS (the LDS Ancestral File lists mother as Catherine Matthew b. about 1580. Her parents were Miles Matthew b. ca 1536 and Catherine b. ca 1540). In 1629 he married MARY COREY (b: @ 1602 in England).
   Edmund, aged thirty-three, wife Mary, and two children, sailed April 10, 1634 on the ship Elizabeth from Ipswich, England. The family settled in Watertown, Massachusetts, where Edmund had a good-sized estate. Edmund's homestead in Watertown was on what is now the east side of Lexington street. But the family removed to Lynn and bought 40 acres of land on the seashore, in the part of the town called Wood End. He was admitted a freeman May 24, 1636 and was elected selectman in 1638. Baker
   One of their children, THOMAS LEWIS, was born in July of 1633 in England. He died on April 26, 1709 in Bristol, Bristol Co., Rhode Island. He married HANNAH BAKER of Lynn, Massechusetts, on November 11, 1659, in Lynn. She was the daughter of EDWARD BAKER (1617 - March 16, 1686/1687 in Lynn, Massachusetts). He was an Englishman who settled on the south side of "Bakers Hill" in Saugus (then Lynn) Massachusetts in 1630. He arrived in the Winthrop fleet, which arrived at Boston and Salem in June-July 1630. He was admitted as a freeman on March 14, 1638. Edward moved to Northampton, Mass. in 1657, but then returned to Lynn where he died. (From A Genealogy of the Descendants of Edward Baker by Nelson M. Baker.) He and his wife JANE or JOAN, had Hannah in 1640.
   Thomas and Hannah's daughter, ESTHER LEWIS (b. 9 Sep 1665) married JEREMIAH FINNEY, a sea captain, on January 7, 1684 in Bristol. The 1689 census of Bristol listed them with one child, but they had many more:
