St Lawrence, Bovingdon, as rebuilt in the mid 19th century

Gould
The Gould family was first found in Suffolk where they held a family seat from early times. English and German: from Old English, Old High German gold (‘gold’), applied as a metonymic occupational name for someone who worked in gold, i.e. a refiner, jeweler, or gilder, or as a nickname for someone who either had many gold possessions or bright yellow hair. The Coat of Arms: On a gold and blue shield a lion counterchanged.
Our Gould ancestors hail from Bovingdon, Herts, England. The name Bovingdon is probably derived from the Old English "bufan dune" meaning "above the down" since the settlement grew up as a clearing in the hill top forest. Until the early years of the 20th century it was little more than a small farming village and (along with its sister village of Flaunden) was a hamlet within the larger parish of Hemel Hempstead.
There has been a church in the village since at least the early 13th century, called St Lawrence. The current church dates only from the nineteenth century (above) since the old medieval church was falling down and had to be rebuilt in 1845. The tower is more or less original though. The church is dedicated to St Lawrence, and still contains a number of memorials from the old church and the effigy of an unknown knight dating from about 1360. The parish registers survive from 1674 although some transcripts exist back to 1604. In 1235, Thomas Gould, apparent trustee of the church, signed a document giving the vicar of Hemel Hempstead the nominations of curates for Bovingdon and Flaunden.
