Henning Family Genealogy

Henning
The name "Henning" is North German, Dutch, and Danish: from a pet form of Hans or Heinrich, but possibly in some cases a variant of the Scottish name Hanning. The Scottish version is a habitational name from a place near Selkirk called Haining (‘piece of enclosed ground’). The earliest known occurrence of the surname is around 1630. The Scottish coat of arms is pictured. It's a red shield with three red escallops on a gold fess between three gold mascles, within a gold border engrailed on which there are torteaux. 'Mascles' are lozenges that are perforated or voided, and represent the links that composed chain armour, and may also represent the mesh of a net. If shown to represent a mesh of net it denotes persuasion; if shown to represent the links in chain armour it denotes protection. The escallops are the badge of pilgrims going to the Holy Land.
The Henning family was first found in Norfolk where they were seated from very ancient times, some say well before the Norman Conquest and the arrival of Duke William at Hastings in 1066 A.D. Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: William Henning settled in Virginia in 1654; Michael Henning settled in Charleston in 1766; Thomas Henning settler in Maryland in 1731.
Our lineage to this family can be traced to SUSANNA HENNING, born @ 1802 in Portage Co., Ohio.
